Garden Helpers

It's nice to have helpers when I'm working in my garden.  When the day gets long or the weeding gets tough, they help keep me focused and motivated.  Meet my eager assistant, Ruby.

rubydoo.jpgRuby's favorite pastimes include garden design and produce tasting, and she's dogged in insisting on correcting poor plant placement.  If I don't heed her advice, I'm likely to discover a dry, withered plant lying just next to the hole I originally planted it in.

Ruby's partner in crime is Liam.  Liam is our air traffic controller, supervising arrivals and departures at our three birdfeeding terminals.  We haven't had a single collision yet - he takes great pride in his work.

While Ruby busily turns the compost...

digs, and weeds...

...Liam applies himself as a barrier method for weed control.  His increasing girth provides ever-greater effectiveness!

Ruby is quite multi-talented.  She prunes plants*...

...and chips and shreds garden waste.

Meanwhile, Liam directs our feathered friends to an alternate landing strip.

Cute post! I posted pictures of the duck who frequently follows me around the yard. Animals and gardens make life extra special.

  • My gardening experience would certainly not be as interesting without their help!

You are fortunate to have both Liam and Ruby helping out in the garden. The good thing, too, is that Ruby isn't too big. It's amazing how fast a dog can dig - and how suddenly they can stop when they've discovered something else to amuse themselves with. Liam is hilarious - does he ever move from his spot? I wouldn't since he looks so comfortable.

  • Ruby can be single-minded. Even worse, she's smart enough to know when she's done something she shouldn't. Occasionally, she'll take the plant she's pulled out of the ground and run away with it - usually to hide under the bed.

Liam does move, though you couldn't tell it from these pictures, could you? It's a big treat for him to get to go outside, because he's only allowed when we're out there with him. So he has to get maximum basking time!

Heehee! I was laughing the whole way through this post, but man, did you save the best for last! Liam is clearly an evil genius.

  • We've always joked that Liam isn't the sharpest knife in the drawer, but there's definitely some subversive plotting going on here!

Ruby is adorable. I think she and my dog would get along well. They both have a lot of common gardening qualities. And I imagine Ruby is also pretty fast. But we do definitely have to get them together NOT in our gardens. We might not have anything left.

I also have a male cat, but he's quite ancient now and rarely makes it outside. Liam does a much better job of keeping the birds away.

  • Alas, Ruby is a rather antisocial little pup. She tends to bark at anything that moves (and doesn't live in her house). It might be fun to get our dogs together, but only after the 30 minutes of mandatory flipping out that would doubtlessly enuse. (*sigh*) And I think you're misinterpreting Liam's intent. He wants the little birdies to come closer. (Clooooseer...) He just wants to help them!

Ok-I am making a note to return to your blog to read more!
And aren't animals the most helpful? I simply love your dog's face! It just begs to be kissed over and over again!! My Sammy and Pacey are my BFFs... and my babies my inspiration!
Can't wait to read more!
An Austin Gardner too!

Such an awesome entry!

I had a dog growing up who would pick tomatoes. he'd find the red tomatoes on the plants, pull them off, and then bring them to the back door and leave them there for my mom to find the next day.

Rachel, you do indeed have great help -- and it's so hard to find these days! Ruby is a doll. She brought a smile to my face; she must be a joy to have. It's so much more fun to garden with friends, isn't it?

Thank you for putting a Blotanical 'Pick' on my second postcard from Pluto.

I've just been re-scrolling through some of your photographs.

Still enjoying them.
