Pictures of Corpus Christi

I took these pictures over Thanksgiving in 2000...

These are the T-heads where the sailboats are docked. In the bay, the water is generally very placid -- almost a mirror. Those tall buildings behind the boats? That's more or less the extent of downtown.

I really like the reflections in these pictures of the Bay.

These are the jetties. They're built to protect the coastline from hurricanes. There's also a seawall built along the water, particularly near downtown. Hurricane Celia did tremendous damage to the city in 1970, but previous major storms brought about most of these improvements.

We've got lots of birds, of course. I have some other pictures of this seagull eating a tiny perch on the dock.

Visible in this picture are two white pelicans and either a loon or a cormorant. In the background is a bottlenosed dolphin. I probably took this picture on the short ferry ride from Port Aransas to Aransas Pass. I see a lot of dolphins on that trip.

We have both white and brown pelicans all around this area, as well as loons, cormorants, great blue herons, roseate spoonbills, and all sorts of lovely birds that I don't have pictures here in Austin to upload. Sometime, I'll steal back my pictures of whooping cranes from my grandmother and write about those.

This little pier is on the back of someone's house on Ocean Drive. Ocean Drive overlooks the bay, and all the houses built on it are mansions. Ironically, those on the bay side of Ocean Drive are the least stable and will probably be the first ones swept away the next time we have a major hurricane.

This pier and little stretch of beach is about a block from my mom's house. She's far enough away from the water that she won't be swept away.

This is a view looking north from the pier. You can see downtown, and the Harbor Bridge is faint off to the side. It's very choppy for Corpus Christi Bay in this picture. There must've been a front coming through.

Nice pictures of Corpus Christi. I've been living in San Diego, Ca. since 1988 (military). Its nice to see images of C.C. I still visit my family at least 2-3 times a year.
