bits and bytes

Kramer says Sagittarians should be trying to enjoy the atmosphere and the company and judge success on that this week (or at least, that's how I'd paraphrase what he said), and to be sure, I didn't catch any fish today. The company part is easy, because everyone seems to be having a down day today -- not just me.

Truly horrid Fridays are never my sole invention -- they always require some input from others, too, and this one is no exception.

I've been trying to nail down my travel plans for next month. I'm bound and determined to go to the Hedwig convention in Toronto at the end of August, but they're all kind of wrapped up in Claudia's plans. We IM'd today and made some preliminary plans, but we don't even know if she'll be able to get back to the country, much less go to Canada two days later. And I can't find my passport anywhere. In the old days, I could get into Canada with a birth certificate and photo id, but I don't know if that would fly in these days of heightened security.

Speaking of heightened security, I keep meaning to record for posterity:
On the flight to Dallas from Austin last weekend, a rather short hop, they pulled aside about half the passengers for baggage inspection before they boarded at the gate. I was sort of convinced that they were going to search me, the girl with the nosering (particularly since my nosering was having a grumpy day that day), but they picked the African-American girl standing in front of me in line instead. And I had to wonder, as I'm sure she did, whether they singled her out because she's African-American. And then I had to scold myself, because they singled out all sorts of people -- families traveling with tiny kids, single people, men, women -- all colors and shapes and sizes. But they searched a lot of people, which seemed strange to me on this, my first flight since September 11th.

And speaking of angry noserings, my nose seems to be in the habit of getting red and angry every Friday. I'm hoping it'll heal up by Monday, the way it did last week, but before that, I'd hoped I was pretty much done with the healing process. It's been almost 5 weeks now -- I'm almost to that point. You couldn't tell it from looking at my nose. They say healing isn't a linear process, and I'm going to have to agree with them there.

The funny thing is, people keep asking me what happens when I have a runny nose. And the answer is: the same thing that happens to people without noserings -- I blow my nose. The ring doesn't really affect it much. The real effect of the ring (in case anyone was wondering) is that when it decides to be angry and regress healing-wise, it's RIGHT ON THE FRONT OF YOUR FACE, where everyone can see it.

...and speaking of seeing it, since I'm making these fabulous seguÈs this evening, go see my photolog and the bird I watched watching me.

It's like this: a bad day fishing is better than a good day at the office.

Hey Rachel, did you really mean for that link to be so long?

;)

Um, probably not, but it didn't show up in my browser. Is it fixed now?
