What's with the dots?
Lloyd came up with this really cool idea for rating weblog entries.
Ý "So I thought about this a bit more, in a graphical way: envisioning each day on the weblog calendar as a colored dot or image, with the color indicating something about the content of the entry itself."
I was struck by Lloyd's idea almost immediately, and I began to brainstorm some different ways to implement it. Then I showed it to my webguru, Phil, who also thought it was really interesting.
Since my weblog is a lot smaller than Phil's, we decided to experiement with it on my site.
As I've implemented the idea on my page (much like Lloyd's original vision),
the rating doesn't really have anything to do with the entry's importance in the grand scheme
of things, or even how interesting it would be to someone else (although I'd like to think that would be true on a practical level). Instead, the entries are rated on how important they are to me.
Thermal Rating Key:
unremarkable
mostly insignificant
somewhat significant
very significant
You'll notice that there are identical dots on the calendar. These provide the thermal rating for the day, which is calculated from the thermal ratings of all the posts for that day. I've got Phil (aka Rachel's web guru) to thank for this bit of automated scripted grooviness, and Lloyd, of course, to thank for the original concept.
I can't wait to see how it evolves!
There's also the fact that I have precious few significant posts in my weblog so far. Maybe this will act as motivation for posting more meaningfully and more often. Maybe?

After the adventures in breaking your weblog, I don't think I'll be transferring it to mine anytime soon. It'd require me to go back and categorize 1000+ entries, some of which were written by authors who no longer write for my blog (and some of whom don't speak to me anymore because we never see each other, in person or online). Plus, I just really don't like rebuilding the ENTIRE blog that often. ;) But, it works marvelously over here, so have fun with it, Rachel. :)
