Hedwig Bliss

O joy! O bliss! O unadulterated sexuality-indiscriminant passion! I must say that my devotion to Hedwig has paid off in spades, as has our impulsive trip to Toronto.

It's 2:08 AM Toronto time, and Sarah and I just got back to the
hotel from the Hedwig convention. In the end, we skipped the movie. Really, the loss isn't so great -- I could recite it for you if you got me drunk enough.

It was the first try at a convention, and it was flawed -- a bit disorganized, a lot of dead time -- but we got to meet all sorts of cool Toronto people while we were waiting in line.

We almost immediately joined another line when we got in -- this time to get autographs. We each got our requisite one autograph, although Sarah got John Cameron Mitchell to sign one of his cigarettes and give it to her. I took some pictures of him, but the line fairy wouldn't let us take a personal picture with him, so we headed down to the theater.

We got settled in and sat through some rather uninspiring live performances, although the Hansel dance was pretty fabulous. Then John Cameron Mitchell came up to answer questions -- lots of questions. They seemed to multiply as time went on.

But the best part, the absolute pinnacle, was when we saw John leaving the theater after the Q&A. We were outside, trying to figure out how we'd catch a cab, when Sarah spotted him down the street. We sort of casually walked over to him, talking to someone else. A girl approached him and started blathering about something he'd said earliier and citing some non-relevant example, and he very patiently nodded and mmhmm'd at her. That, I think, is a downside to relative celebrity-- having to listen to people quoting you to your face. Despite being dead tired, he let me take a picture of him with Sarah. (That, of course, would be another downside to celebrity -- having to placate one last fan before you go home.) But a picture he very generously allowed us, and he winked and grinned at me after I took it. I think I giggled like a schoolgirl. How humiliating.

And then he asked me to watch his stuff.

Um, yes, of course I'll watch your stuff, John Cameron Mitchell, who I admire and respect and secretly crush on despite your preference for those -not- of my gender. Like you would really have to ask. Can I buy you a drink or something? ...It was in my mind, people. I'm fairly sure I didn't blather.

I watched his gift bags for a few minutes while he ran down the street to say bye to someone, and then he came back and thanked us before slipping away into the night. Then Sarah and I caught a cab and got all giddy.

I can't wait until I get back to Texas and am able to post pictures again. Tomorrow night, fates wlling.

What an awesome weekend it's been. Does tomorrow really have to be Sunday? It occurs to me that I'm rather lacking in both souveniers and places to pack them.
