long weekend

A few years ago, my other aunt made my mom a coconut cream pie, then gave the rest of us the beater to lick. I tasted it and rinsed off my hands, thinking I must have some soap left on them -- the filling tasted soapy! I didn't think anything of it until my aunt did the exact same thing. At first, we thought some dish soap might've spilled into the filling, but eventually, we realized that the coconut was rancid and tasted like soap. It all makes sense, given that a lot of soaps use coconut oils, but it didn't occur to any of us at first.

Anyway. The worst part of the trip? Well, there was the part where my grandmother ordered me to take my nose ring out. Never mind that it took her three hours to notice it. No, I didn't take it out, and yes, she got over it relatively quickly, but I dreaded that part of the weekend, and I was glad for it to be over.

The change in scenery was nice for my photography. I like having different textures and details to look at than I see in Austin, and I got several good pictures out of the weekend. As a matter of fact, the whole weekend made me crave film photography. I can't explain exactly why -- I love the fact that I can take a ton of pictures on my digital camera to get one keeper, and just throw the extras away -- but I really wanted a macro lens that could capture tiny details and play with the light.

Despite the stagnant heat in Corpus, I found the evening refreshing overall, and now I'm back in Austin, recharged and almost ready to start my week again. I could always use one more day off, though...
