moderated weblogging?

Here's an interesting variation on weblogging: I noticed an article on the back of one of the campus publicity rags (published by the Office of Public Affairs) that six first-year students from all walks of life were publishing web journals, sponsored by the OPA and the Office of Admissions, through December.

Just to clarify, these are clearly not weblogs. They are written with definite audiences in mind (prospective students being the primary one), and they're all very positive toward the University and dorm life. They aren't dated, so I can't tell how frequently they're updated, but the print article I read about them says they're biweekly. My impression is that they're written, then submitted to someone to post online -- I rather doubt that there's a weblogging system behind the scenes.

I believe the students are writing the entries, but I have no idea whether they're being edited before publishing, or whether the students have subject-matter guidelines to follow. Specifically, the journals are referred to like this:

Follow the experiences of six, first-year students as they live, learn, and have fun at the University of Texas at Austin. Through their biweekly Web journals, these six freshmen will share their insigts and document their lives as newly inducted Longhorns.

It's an interesting idea, but it's way too wrapped up in the public relations end of the University. I've studied both journalism and advertising, and both subjects are concerned with the blurring of the line between advertising and editorial content. The line is absolutely blurred in these journals.

I'd be fascinated to see what these students thought of the University, but there's no way I'd completely trust what I read in a web journal sponsored by the Office of Public Affairs.

...Maybe it's just me.

Somewhere, out there, is a student who has a real blog...a blog upon which the brave can read the truth about what's lurking in the res hall kitchen...
