Congress Avenue Bridge
I expected to see thirty or forty people protesting at the Congress Avenue bridge this afternoon, but the turnout was much, much higher. The bridge was packed on both sides, from end to end. I was impressed.
The response we got from the passing cars was largely positive, although I counted five or six people flipping us off. There's one in every crowd!
What I found most interesting was the surreptitious way information was spread from person to person. We accumulated nine or ten flyers before we left after dark, but most of those were passed to us as inconspicuously as possible. Likewise, verbal messages were passed as whispers. Paranoia? I have a hard time telling anymore. Six or seven people were handcuffed and led away for blocking the flow of traffic. It was more like twenty or thirty people who took to the street and stood in the way of oncoming cars, but only a few were taken away. I saw most of them back later, so I don't think they were actually arrested. We stayed safely on the sidewalk, thankyouverymuch.
C and I were interviewed twice, and we had our pictures taken countless times -- once by a photographer for the Statesman. I'm rather hoping our pictures don't end up on the front page tomorrow morning.
