Cash

I wasn't particularly shocked by the death of Johnny Cash a week and a half ago. He's been in poor health for years, and I never listened to his music much anyway. But I have to say, I found the video for his cover of NIN's Hurt to be stunning. Simply stunning -- simple and poignant. I've watched the RealMedia version of it fifteen or twenty times. If you haven't seen it, go watch it. And then watch it again.

Johnny Cash is probably one of the most talented musicians of the twentieth century. Most people have never listened to his music, just heard it. From his earliest work, his songs were simple, wise and poignant. A recent tribute to Johnny Cash on CMT showed what an extraordinary songwriter he was. Keb Mo had to change the lyrics to Folsum Prison Blues because they were too disturbing! Even most of his fans don't recognize how good he really was.
